Whether you want to keep coyotes out of your yard or keep your dog from running away, this DIY fence roll bar called a coyote roller will do the trick. We’ll list the materials you’ll need and explain each step of how to build your own coyote roller.
Material:
• Tape measure
• PVC pipe: 1” diameter inner roll, 3” diameter outer roll
• Steel braided wire (about 1 foot longer than the pipe for tie-down)
• L-brackets 4” x 7/8” (2 per length of PVC pipe)
• Crimp/Wire Anchor Locks (2 per length of PVC pipe)
• Electric drill
• Hacksaw
• Wire cutters
Step 1: You will need to determine the length of the fence where the coyote rollers will be placed. This will allow you to determine the length of pipe and wire needed to cover the fence lines. Do this before ordering supplies. A good rule of thumb is about 4-5 foot sections. Use this number to determine your L-brackets, crimps, and wire anchor locks.
Step 2: Once you have the PVC pipe and other materials, use a hacksaw to cut the pipe to the desired length. You can cut small diameter PVC pipe ½” to ¾” long to allow the larger diameter pipe to roll freely and connect wires more easily.
Step 3: Attach the L-brackets to the top of the fence. The L should face the center where the wire is placed. Measure the second L-bracket. Leave about a 1/4 inch gap between the PVC pipe ends.
Step 4: Measure the distance between the L-brackets, add about 12 inches to that measurement, and use wire cutters to cut the first length of wire.
Step 5: On one of the L-brackets, secure the wire using a crimp/wire anchor lock and thread the wire through the smaller diameter PVC pipe. Take the larger diameter PVC tube and slide it over the smaller tube.
Step 6: On the other L-bracket, pull the wire taut so the “roller” is over the top of the fence and secure with another crimp/wire anchor lock.
Repeat these steps as needed until you are satisfied with the coverage on the fence.
This should stop anything trying to jump or crawl into the yard. Also, if you have an escape artist’s dog, it should keep them inside the fence. This is not a guarantee, but the feedback we got suggests this approach can be an effective solution.
